LaPorte County Prosecuting Attorney John Espar announced that a Porter County resident has been charged with OWI causing death and reckless homicide. As a result of a traffic accident that happened in southern LaPorte County. In February 16th, 46 year old Jeffery Bilyak, a dentist residing in Chesterton, was northbound near the 20000 south block of US 421 when he attempted to pass a semi. This occured during extremely reduced visibility conditions, which had previously that morning caused LaPorte County to be under a travel advisory due to dense fog causing visibility to be less than a quarter of a mile. Bilyak’s truck collided head on with an ambulance heading southbound. The ambulance was transporting a 47 year old female, critical patient in need of medical attention traveling to a hospital in Indianapolis. The patient died from the trauma of her accident injuries the following day. The ambulance driver and attendant received serious bodily injuries along with Bilyak. Sheriff’s deputies and detectives determined Bilyak’s BAC was .173 shortly after the crash. Bilyak is also charged with two counts of OWI causing serious bodily injury. Espar noted that all of the charges are merely accusations and that Bilyak is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.
