A Chicago man was arrested Sunday on multiple charges after fleeing an Indiana State Trooper.
Trooper Alaa Hamed was sitting stationary at 5:26 a.m., in his fully marked police car in the cross over at the 2.5 mile marker (this is approximately 2 ½ miles east of the Indiana/Illinois state line) on the Indiana Toll Road when he saw a 2018 Ford SUV east bound in the left lane at a high rate of speed. Hamed was able to clock the SUV on his radar at 96 miles-per-hour in a posted 70 miles-per-hour speed zone. When Hamed pulled out to catch up with the Ford it had accelerated to 110 mph.
Hamed made a traffic stop on the SUV at the 8 mile marker. When he approached the driver’s window the male black (sole occupant) failed to identify himself and fled the scene in the Ford. Hamed pursued the SUV which sped up in excess of 135 miles-per-hour. The SUV exited the Toll Road at Buchanan Street (Gary) where it went north. The SUV stayed on Buchanan as it switched into Access Road (entrance into U.S. Steel facility). It stayed on Access Road when it suddenly stopped, then made a U-turn in an east parking lot where it crashed into a concrete barrier. The male driver then fled from the SUV.
A foot pursuit ensued with the male driver running through the parking lot into the U.S. Steel Mill facility (this consist of many separate buildings and alleys). At one point Hamed lost sight of the male driver and a perimeter was set up. After approximately 30 minutes the perimeter was broken up.
A search of the SUV resulted in finding cocaine and over $1,000 in U.S. currency. Shortly after a U.S. Steel security officer stated the male driver had stolen a steel mill uniform (orange jumpsuit) and a white hard hat. The security officer stated the male driver had run out of the mills going west into a wooded area.
Another search ensued where the male driver was located hiding under a bush.
The male driver was identified as 26 year old, Deshun M. Guy, of Chicago.
Guy was taken to Lake County Jail in Crown Point and charged with: Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle, Resisting Law Enforcement, Possession of Cocaine, Theft, OWI-Refusal, Failure to Identify, Reckless Driving, and Operator Never Licensed.
