The City of Michigan City will spend the summer collecting information about community-wide greenhouse gas emissions as one of thirteen communities selected to be a part of Indiana University’s first Resilience Cohort.
Findings from the community-wide greenhouse gas inventory will be used to help residents and
local officials understand Michigan City’s current emissions profile and to help city government
employees create an action plan to reduce emissions, increase energy efficiency and improve air quality. Findings from the local government operations inventory will be used to help city employees identify greenhouse gas reduction strategies for municipal activities. Mayor Ron Meer said on Wednesday, “The City is passionate about the environment. We are dedicated to improving the quality of life for our citizens. This project will give us a strategy on where to begin to act to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. The Mayor added, “This is a great opportunity for the City to partner with Indiana University and to receive an intern for the summer.”
The Resilience Cohort was established by the Environmental Resilience Institute, an Indiana
University Prepared for Environmental Change Grand Challenge initiative. Mayor Ron Meer anticipates that the community wide inventory will be done by the completion
of the Resilience Cohort, September 15th. The City of Michigan City thanked NIPSCO for their contribution of $1,000 that will go towards the intern’s stipend.
