On Friday, a healthy newborn baby girl was safely surrendered, at Franciscan Health Hospital in Hammond, via a Safe Haven Baby Box that had been active for less than 30 days.  This is the third newborn placed in a Safe Haven Baby Box in less than two years in Indiana. This is also the seventh surrendered infant in Indiana for 2019. Franciscan Hospital Emergency Department and security were notified by the alarm as soon as the newborn’s mother opened the outside door to place her baby in the box. Within 90 seconds, the newborn baby was retrieved from the box and received medical care.  The hospital staff worked flawlessly as they followed every hospital and Safe Haven Baby Boxes protocol established for receiving a newborn baby birthed outside a hospital.
