The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office has announced that in preparation of Halloween, Operation Porch Light was initiated, which was a county-wide compliance check of all Violent Predators, Sexually Violent Predators and Offenders Against Children. The operation was conducted on Wednesday, October 23 with deputies from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, investigators from the La Porte and Michigan City Police Departments, Fugitive Apprehension Street Team, La Porte County Drug Task Force, Gary Parole District, Indiana State Police and United States Marshals Service participating in the sex offender compliance check. Eighty-seven (87) of the classified and registered Violent Predators, Sexually Violent Predators and Offenders Against Children were specifically targeted because of the upcoming trick-or-treat activities that will be taking place during Halloween. Two (2) of the offenders were found to be non-compliant and arrest warrants are being sought for them for various offenses related to the Sex and Violent Offender Registry. Of those non-complaint offenders, one has been identified as a Sex Offender and the other is a Sexually Violent Predator. One offender, 41 year old Joseph M. Stevenson, was already a wanted person for registry violations and was arrested during the compliance check. Stevenson was arrested for two (2) Level 5 Felony Failure to Register Violations. Stevenson remains in the La Porte County Jail and is being held on a $15,000 cash-only bond through La Porte County Circuit Court. The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, as well as all 92 of Indiana’s Sheriffs, utilize the OffenderWatch Sex Offender Management System to manage and monitor the whereabouts of these convicted offenders.
