Just as many of you are, Mayor Duane Parry is concerned with the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and the effect it may have on our community. Until more is known, it is best to use common sense as we are examining all information in order to pass helpful documents, research, policies, etc. along to you without creating unnecessary panic.

Mayor Parry recognizes the important role our City plays in providing essential services to our citizens and community. The health and well-being of our valued residents and employees are our top priority. As we navigate the rapidly evolving coronavirus (COVID-19) situation together, we want to share with you the extra precautions the City is taking.

We have spent the last several days preparing for how the virus may impact our community. To that effect we have established a task force made up of a group of Department Heads that are working closely with the CDC, and LaPorte County to ensure we are taking all necessary preventative measures. We will continue to keep our citizens and employees abreast of our planning and decision making as things unfold.

Today, Mayor Parry has implemented an Executive Order cancelling certain government meetings and implementing policies to protect our City Government workforce. This Executive Order will now close the Michigan City Senior Center and events planned at this location. Secondly, the order will suspend certain City Boards and meetings until further notice. The Mayor is requesting that with the Board of Works and City Council meetings, the public view these meetings on our local television access channel 97 or at

Mayor Parry will keep the public updated on any additional closures of public facilities and ensures that City Hall along with City departments and services will remain open.

Mayor Parry has also been in direct contact with the Michigan City Area Schools along with Franciscan Hospital.

Mayor Parry will adhere to the order by Governor Holcomb to discontinue all non-essential gatherings over 250 people. The City fully expects there may be additional actions that must be taken if the virus escalates.
