The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) announced the arrest of Donald G. HELMS (38 YOA) of Michigan City. Early Sunday morning , Captain Andy Hynek was traveling eastbound in the 10000 north block of US 12. He observed a westbound vehicle approaching him at a slow rate of speed that was driving left of center. After the vehicle passed, Captain Hynek turned around and caught up to the vehicle. At approximately 1:13 AM, Captain Hynek attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle along US 12 near CR 600 West. However, the vehicle refused to stop and a motor vehicle pursuit was initiated. The 17-minute pursuit traveled multiple roads in Michigan and Springfield Townships. At the intersection of CR 400 West and CR 800 North, the vehicle drove off the roadway. The vehicle reversed, rammed Captain Hynek’s police vehicle and drove away. At the intersection of Royal Road and Warnke Road, the vehicle struck a set of tire deflation devices that were deployed by officers from the Michigan City Police Department. The vehicle drove over the tire deflation devices and continued on. Eventually, the vehicle stopped near 3101 Springland Avenue, Michigan City. The driver immediately exited the vehicle and began to flee on foot. Deputy Andrew Hahn and his K-9 partner Miko began to give chase after the driver. Shortly thereafter, Miko took the driver to the ground. The driver proceeded to strike Miko several times. As a result, Miko continued to engage and bit the driver’s right and left thighs. To protect and prevent an injury to Miko, Deputy Hahn tased the driver. He was then taken into custody. The driver was identified as HELMS. A computer check determined HELMS was a wanted person by the LCSO. HELMS was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Following treatment, HELMS was transported to the La Porte County Jail (LCJ). He was arrested for several offenses and remains housed in the LCJ and is being held without bond.
