On Sunday September 6th at approximately 7:00 P.M., Officer Matt Babcock was patrolling the area of Barker Avenue and Oak Street, when he observed a dark colored Chevrolet Impala traveling at a high rate of speed on Oak
Street. Officer Babcock began to follow this vehicle and observed several more turn signal related traffic infractions.
Officer Babcock then conducted a traffic stop on this vehicle in the area of Maple Avenue and Greenwood Avenue. The vehicle came to a stop at which time Officer Babcock made contact with the driver and four (4) other
passengers who were not wearing their seatbelts. Officer Babcock identified all the passengers and returned to his patrol vehicle to issue citations.
While completing all the citations, La Porte County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) K9 Officer Jon Samuelson arrived to assist with his K9 partner Bosco.
Deputy Samuelson conducted a free air sniff of the vehicle utilizing Bosco, at which time Bosco alerted to the presence of illegal drugs within the vehicle. The occupants were removed, and a search of the vehicle was
conducted. Located within the vehicle were baggies with suspected marijuana residue, drug paraphernalia and two (2) semi-automatic handguns.
