The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office says that a man was arrested following a domestic disturbance Sunday night in Fish Lake. Deputy Austin Epple was dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of Cherry Street in Fish Lake, in reference to a domestic disturbance. Responding units learned that 32 year Calvin H. Swanson had been battered and stabbed by his roommate, 65 year old Michael R. Brewer of Fish Lake.
Indiana Conservation Officer Alex Toth arrived and made contact with Swanson outside the residence. Swanson had several cuts and abrasions, was bleeding, and appeared to have been severely battered. Swanson was transported to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries. Deputy Epple and Officer Toth approached the residence to make contact with Brewer. Brewer acknowledged the presence of Epple and Toth, however refused to open the door. Other deputies began to respond to the residence to assist.
Captain Derek Allen attempted to make contact with Brewer several times by telephone. All attempts failed and several deputies converged on the residence. Captain Allen again attempted to make contact with Brewer several more times just outside the residence to no avail. It was at this time, Sergeant Jeff Wright introduced chemical agents into the interior of the residence. Several minutes later, Brewer exited and was immediately taken into custody. On Tuesday, Detective Sergeant Adam Hannon successfully secured criminal charges against Brewer. He has been charged with Battery with a Deadly Weapon and Battery Causing Serious Bodily Injury
