Washington Park Drowning
On 6/19/21 at 8:09pm, LaPorte County Regional Dispatch Center, dispatched Michigan City Police Department, Michigan City Fire Department, United States Coast Guard, to Washington Park to assist with a possible drowning. Officers arrived on scene and began to speak with witnesses and learned that a group of individuals were in the water and three subjects began to struggle while swimming. A couple of “Good Samaritans” noticed
the subjects struggling and came to assist. Once they returned to shore it was determined that an 11-year-old juvenile was still missing in the water. Search measures were quickly put in place and members of the Michigan City Fire Department located the juvenile. The juvenile was pulled from the lake by Michigan City Fire and they began to administer CPR with assistance from LaPorte County EMS. The juvenile was transported to Franciscan Health where the juvenile passed away. On 6/20/21 at approximately 1:00pm LaPorte County Regional Dispatch Center dispatched Officers to Washington Park in reference to a possible drowning. Upon arriving Officers spoke with witnesses who stated that they were on the sand bar and had slipped off into deeper water. They began to struggle to get back into the sand bar from the deeper water and they advised that their friend, a 14-year-old juvenile had gone underwater and had not resurfaced. Emergency responders were able to coordinate efforts and located the juvenile. First Responders began rescue efforts and the juvenile was transported to Franciscan Health and later flown out to South Bend, where the juvenile is currently on life support. We are very saddened by these incidents and send our condolences, thoughts, and prayers to the family of the young juveniles. Other first responders assisting in the incidents were Officer Mark Galetti, Sgt. Mike Oberle, Officer Dave Baker, Michigan City Fire Department, LaPorte County EMS, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and United States Coast Guard.
