–The Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) is pleased to announce Greg Hunt, Ed.S., assistant superintendent of business and operations for LaPorte Community School Corporation in LaPorte, Indiana, is the recipient of ASBO International’s 2021 Pinnacle of Achievement Award.
The Pinnacle Award recognizes school business professionals for their resourcefulness and creativity in solving the challenges that school districts face today. Hunt received the honor for a building project that utilized district – owned land and buildings, prevented redistricting, maximized space, and made the best use of budget dollars.
After a facilities assessment identified necessary updates and projected the need for additional space to accommodate new programming, the district determined that even with extensive renovations, the older of the two middle schools wouldn’t be adequate or provide an equitable learning experience for students.
Unable to find an appropriate new site that didn’t require redistricting, LaPorte district leaders decided to consolidate the two middle schools on the newer school’s campus. They renovated the existing building and built an addition that provided enough space to accommodate all the middle school
students. Fifth graders were moved from the crowded elementary schools to the new middle school campus, freeing up space to add PreK classes. The older middle school building now houses central administration, special education offices, a special education preschool, and alternative education.
According to Hunt, “This project allowed us to utilize land we already owned, prevented redistricting, solved inequities for students, allowed shifting and maximizing of space throughout the district, made the best use of the budget, and provided flexibility for the future.”
The Pinnacle Awards are sponsored by Virco, Inc., to showcase replicable projects and practices that allow district business leaders to exchange and implement new ideas to better support their schools and communities.
