Lubeznik Center for the Arts’ (LCA) mission is to integrate art, education and community to provide access to compelling exhibitions and programs that explore contemporary ideas. LCA programs reach thousands of students and adults in local communities. Thanks to the support of the Healthcare Foundation of La Porte, LCA will continue to direct its efforts toward expanding art education in the La Porte community. These education and outreach programs expand horizons, improve literacy and fight adverse impacts of poverty by creating youth connections.
One of LCA’s successful initiatives has been the delivery of Student Learning Tours to school children who were not able to visit the center on field trips due to the pandemic. These tours include high-quality video and accompanying curriculum resources that teachers can use to bring the art into their classrooms. Also, a very successful Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) camp was offered at Handley Elementary in La Porte. STEAM curriculum enhances transferable critical thinking skills and connects youth to drive their feeling of community.
Programs in 2020–2021 served more than 800 students in the City of La Porte through a combination of virtual tours, Family Days, and the 8-week STEAM camp. LCA is proud to have received a recent grant from the Healthcare Foundation of La Porte to continue expanding its reach in the coming year.
Building upon its previous successes, this important grant will allow LCA to continue enhancing its Student Learning Tour curriculum, and, once again, offer STEAM camp at a La Porte elementary school, with a special emphasis on Title One schools. In addition, new this year will be a Bi-lingual Family Day developed under the direction of LCA Education Director Nelsy Marcano.
“As accessibility is at the heart of LCA’s mission, I am thrilled to expand our offering to the Spanish-speaking community in this way!” comments Marcano. “As the Hispanic community of La Porte makes up approximately 13% of the population, it is a wonderful way to bring quality cultural experiences to more families.”
This event is scheduled for September 11, 2021, from 11 AM – 4 PM (Central), and families can register on our website at lubeznikcenter.org. Family Days are filled with fun and art-making activities for all ages!
