WHEATFIELD, Ind. – NIPSCO’s R.M. Schahfer Generating Station in Wheatfield hosted a special event for all of the plant employees this past Saturday. Employees were able to bring members of their family to the facility to take guided tours, participate in several games, enjoy a catered lunch, and win door prizes. This is the first Family Day that the Facility has hosted in over 5 years, with nearly 300 visitors coming for the event.
Superintendent of Operations, Aaron Steinhilber of the R.M. Schahfer Generating Station, and a member of the Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department brought one of the department’s three engines for the event. The engine was set up in the main parking lot. Family members and kids were able to see inside the cab of the engine, see some of the tools that firefighters use, spray water from a hose line and even get some souvenirs. Aaron also showed employees the capability of the engine to flow large volumes of water —2,000 gallons per minute — and even let some employees operate the deck gun on top of the truck.
Throughout the NIPSCO service territory, NIPSCO often collaborates with various fire departments in Northern Indiana on emergencies from electric and gas emergencies.
Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department says it was happy to supply an engine for the Family Day event and is looking forward to participating in future events.
