Bay Logistics, in partnership with affiliated firm Martin Transportation Systems (MTS), has expanded operations with the acquisition of a 190,000 square-foot facility on 15 paved acres at 923 West US 20.
The third-generation family-owned transportation, logistics and warehousing provider recently purchased the land and building to provide a central location for both the trucking and warehousing sides of its businesses.
“We are based in Grand Rapids, Mich., and Bay Logistics owns and operates over 3 million square feet of warehouse space. Our sister company MTS runs a fleet of 1200-plus tractors and more than 3000 trailers, and recently earned another Supplier of the Year designation by General Motors,” said Kurt Cuncannan, Chief Operating Officer of Bay Logistics. “Our new Michigan City operations will serve as a trucking terminal, truck/trailer maintenance shop, and a 180,000 square foot public distribution center.”
The building has undergone an extensive “make-over,” including a new roof, interior and exterior painting, new HAVC equipment, enhanced fire suppression system, new LED lighting, fence repairs/replacement, truck dock installations and parking lot upgrades.
“We have invested heavily in IT systems, added some docks, upgraded the fire suppression system, renovated some of the office space and restrooms and put in new flooring where needed,” Cuncannan said.
Bay Logistics currently operates from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday with a team of 10 employees.
“Longer hours of operation and more associates will be required as we continue to ramp up our client base,” he said.
Due to this, Cuncannan said that MTS is currently in the market for truck drivers and mechanics.
He added that Michigan City’s location along the I 94 Corridor is a perfect and natural point of expansion for both MTS and Bay Logistics.
Having an established, family-owned business land in Michigan City highlights how the city continues to attract quality companies, added Michigan City Mayor Duane Parry.
“Bay Logistics has a long history of serving the transportation and warehousing industries with its offerings. We are honored that the team has added another spot here in Michigan City as part of the company’s extensive portfolio,” Parry said. “Our business landscape and connectivity to Michigan and Chicago continue to pave our way toward more momentum and additional growth.”
Cressy Commercial Real Estate from Mishawaka, IN was the broker of record for this transaction.
