The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office announces the arrest of 48-year-old Troy L. Slack in connection with the April 22 death of Keith A. Eastwood.

Eastwood was struck Monday morning by a vehicle in the 11800 west block of U.S. 6.  Following the crash, the vehicle left the scene.  Eastwood was found by a citizen who had been traveling along U.S. 6 at approximately 6:00 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division and members of the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team (FACT) responded to the scene and launched a major investigation into the fatal hit and run crash.

Significant evidence from the involved vehicle was recovered at the scene.  The same evidence assisted and narrowed the search by color, approximate year, and manufacturer for a suspect vehicle.  Detectives identified a suspect vehicle in the Flock Safety camera database that had been traveling on U.S. 6 during the timeframe of when the crash occurred.

Tuesday morning, Captain Andy Hynek located the involved vehicle in the 700 block of Capital Road in Porter County. Slack was taken into custody at the residence and transported to the Sheriff’s Office.  The vehicle was impounded from the property and transported to a secure facility.

A probable cause affidavit was prepared and presented to the La Porte County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and later to La Porte County Circuit Court. On Wednesday, an arrest warrant was issued for Slack for the offense of leaving the scene – causing death.

Slack remains housed in the La Porte County Jail and is being held on a $20,000 cash-only bond through Circuit Court.
