The Michigan City Tree Board is combining Earth Day and Arbor Day this year, and will celebrate on May
4 with a free tree giveaway at the Michigan City Farmers Market from 8:30 a.m. until noon. They will
host another giveaway from 1-4 p.m. the same day at the Earth Day Extravaganza at Krueger Memorial
Park.

In addition to the beautification of your property, trees provide many benefits, including shade, reducing
your energy costs, windbreak, privacy, cleaner air, noise reduction and higher property value.

Warmer spring weather marks the start of landscaping season and from time to time all trees will
require some maintenance. Within the City of Michigan City, City Ordinance Sec102-46 deals with hiring
a company or tree service to cut or prune trees on your property. The Ordnance reads: “Unlawful to
operate without license. It shall be unlawful for any person or firm to engage in the business or
occupation of pruning, treating, or removing any city trees and/or private trees within the city
without first applying for and procuring a license.”
