A Wisconsin man was arrested after a police pursuit according to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Department.
Last Friday Dec. 13, at 11:45 a.m., a deputy was monitoring traffic along the south side of U.S. 20 near Springville Road. The deputy observed an SUV traveling eastbound at a higher rate of speed than other traffic, and the driver not restrained by a seatbelt. The Deputy began to travel eastbound on US 20 behind the SUV. Upon approach of the Fail Road intersection, it was determined the SUV was traveling in excess of the 45 miles per hour posted speed limit.
Deputy Sanchez attempted a traffic stop in the area of U.S. 20 and Fail Road. However, the SUV slowed, conducted a U-turn across all lanes of the highway, and began to flee westbound on U.S. 20, initiating a motor vehicle pursuit (MVP). The fleeing SUV continued westbound on U.S. 20 to I-94. The pursuit continued onto eastbound I-94 where the decision was made to terminate the pursuit several miles later.
At about 11:58 a.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Department Deputies observed the same SUV traveling westbound on I-94 in the area of the Indiana / Michigan state line where a second pursuit was initiated. In the area of the 39-mile marker, the fleeing SUV crashed into the rear of a semi-trailer. The driver exited, began to flee on foot, and into a nearby wooded area. Deputy Justin Phillips, along with his K-9 – Riot, assisted Lake County Deputies by taking the subject into custody a short time later.
The subject was identified as 29-year-old Maurice Williams of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The original deputy took custody of Williams and transported him to the La Porte County Jail where he remains held for dealing in cocaine, dealing in methamphetamine, poss. of firearm by SVF, resisting law enforcement and multiple Wisconsin arrest warrants
