A 26-year-old from Illinois man is facing criminal charges after fleeing from Indiana police into Chicago with a 4-year-old in the vehicle.

Just after 5 p.m.Tuesday, Highland police attempted to perform a traffic stop on a BMW in Hammond.  The officers were participating in a joint law enforcement operation involving multiple agencies.

The driver fled and Highland police officers initiated a pursuit.  Police officers with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and Lake County’s Aviation Unit helicopter assisted as the fleeing driver headed onto Torrence Avenue, then entered I-94 westbound into Illinois.

Near 53rd and Morgan in Chicago, officers performed a precision immobilization technique to stop the BMW safely.  A man exited the vehicle and fled on foot; leaving a 4-year-old child inside the vehicle. He continued to flee and was tased.

The subject is identified as a 26-year-old from Illinois.   He was placed into custody, medically cleared and transported to a correctional facility in Chicago where he will await extradition to Indiana.  He faces charges including felony fleeing, reckless endangerment of a child and marijuana possession.

The 4-year-old child was checked by paramedics at the scene and was placed in the custody of relatives.

Police did not give further information.
