On Monday, January 27, 2025 at the NPUSC monthly board meeting, the NPUSC Board of School Trustees passed a resolution opposing HB 1136 and HB 1501 that are currently being considered in committee. These bills will take away local control of schools and as a result disband the public school board and turn those school districts into Charter schools – people who do not live in our communities will be in charge of running our schools. At this time these bills would affect five school districts within Indiana which include two that are local to us – Tri-Township Consolidated Schools in LaPorte County and Gary Community Schools. Public schools belong to the public. We highly encourage members of our communities and beyond to reach out to our local legislatures and tell them if this bill goes up for vote, to vote NO.

In addition, we urge you to contact the above legislators along with Senator Jeff Raatz, the Senate Education Committee Chairperson, to not only consider the following bills, but to vote YES on them – SB 320 and SB 403. Both bills increase oversight and accountability on voucher-receiving private schools and charter schools… If these schools are going to receive public dollars then they should have to play by the same rules as public schools. To contact the chair, you can email Sen. Jeff Raatz at s27@iga.in.gov or call his office at 317.233.0930
