Lake County Sheriff’s Department police officers launched a rescue Tuesday to save a dog that made its way to the roof of a three-story house.

Sheriff Oscar Martinez says that someone in the area flagged Officer Vicari down after spotting the dog on top of a home near 18th and Malcolm X Drive in Gary sometime around 1 p.m.

“The Gary Fire Department was contacted but refused to respond citing that they did not want to risk the safety of their fire personnel,” Martinez stated on the Lake County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page.

“As a result, Lake County Sheriff’s Department police officer Sgt. C. Salomon asked nearby tree experts at Townsend Tree Company to bring a boom lift or cherry picker to help bring the dog down safely,” Martinez stated.

The company worked with Officer Vicari to rescue the dog from the roof without incident. Gary Animal Control and Silver Strays took possession of the dog.

“I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to both Officer Vicari and Sergeant Salomon for their bravery and compassion,” Martinez stated.  “We thank them for going above and beyond the call of duty! Also, a big thanks to Townsend Tree Company, Gary Animal Control, Silver Strays and all of the members of the community who pitched in to save the dog. It’s wonderful to see so many people working together to help an animal in need.”
