Just before noon Monday, the Chesterton Police Department received a report from a business owner in the 200 block of Lincoln Avenue who stated that he had just been robbed at knifepoint. CPD patrol officers responded, and after speaking with the victim and witnesses, obtained a description and license plate number of the suspect vehicle.
Utilizing their network of FLOCK license plate reading cameras (LPRs), officers were able to track the movement of the suspect vehicle as it left Chesterton and traveled into La Porte County. CPD investigators and administrators responded to the area to assist in locating the vehicle and suspect.
At approximately 2:00 p.m., a Michigan City Police Department officer located the suspect vehicle near East Michigan Boulevard and Carroll Avenue after it was detected by local LPR cameras. The vehicle was stopped, and the driver was detained without incident at East Michigan Boulevard and East 10th Street.
The suspect, a 23-year-old male from Michigan City, was transported to the Michigan City Police Department for questioning by CPD detectives. The suspect’s vehicle was impounded. The suspect was later transported to the Porter County Jail on a preliminary charge of armed robbery. The suspect’s name is being withheld pending the filing of formal charges by the Porter County Prosecutor’s Office.
The investigation remains active, and no further details will be released at this time. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident.
