The Town of Chesterton announced that leaf collection will begin on Oct. 27.
“We’re getting into the season where we have to talk about leaves,” Chesterton Street Commissioner told the Town Council at its meeting Monday night, Oct. 13. “We’re starting to get calls. There are leaf piles out there.”
Schnadenberg announced that crews will begin this year’s five-week leaf collection program on Monday, Oct. 27.
As much as the weather and leaf volumes permit, crews will follow the traditional pickup schedule per the map below.
The Town of Chesterton also gave the following information:
“Please keep in mind the following:
DO NOT MIX BRUSH, GARBAGE, POP CANS, OR OTHER DEBRIS WITH LEAVES. The leaf vacuums are designed for leaves only and could be damaged by brush and other debris.
*DO NOT PLACE LEAF PILES IN ALLEYS: The Street Department’s leaf vacs are large pieces of machinery unable to negotiate the narrow alleys. Please rake your leaf piles to curbside.
*DO NOT PLACE LEAVES IN DITCHES: The leaf vacs work poorly in ditches and tend to collect water along with the leaves, leaving them sodden. For that reason crews have to rake the leaves out of the ditches and that takes time. Rake your piles to the flat surface at the road’s edge.
Folks are likely to see leaf vacs out and about in the week prior to the official start of the program. These will be crews performing shakedowns on their equipment and they will not be operating according to a schedule.”
