Two crashes occurred on I-94 in the early evening Thursday in Michigan City, according to the Indiana State Police.
At 6:11 p.m. police said there was a crash on I-94 eastbound at the 38 mile marker, which is one mile west of US 20 and 6 miles east of U.S. 421. Police said it was a multi-vehicle crash involving a rolled over semi in the median. All lanes were blocked. Early reports were that there were injuries and at least one person was trapped in their vehicle.
At 6:43 p.m. the Indiana State Police reported that a second crash that had occurred eastbound in the backup of the original crash on I-94. The 2nd crash was at the 34.4 mile-marker. Reports were that one of the vehicles was fully engulfed.
At 10:48 p.m. ISP gave an update on the I-94 eastbound lane closure near Michigan City. Police said the trailer had been blocking all lanes of travel when it rolled over and struck the median wall. Police said the trailer had since been removed and tow trucks were working on removing the tractor and other vehicles. At the time of the posting police said they were hoping to have at least one lane open within the next half hour to 45 minutes.
The ISP said more information will be released when it is available and that this has turned into an OWI investigation with the driver of the semi under suspension for being under the influence.
