A 24-year-old woman has been charged after she fired a handgun into the ground which then fragmented and ricocheted into another woman’s face, according to Michigan City Police.
Last Wednesday, an officer was at 7th and Franklin Street when he heard a gunshot being fired in the area. Moments later, the Raven Gunshot Detection system confirmed the gunshot and determined it came from the 200 block of East 7th Street. The officer proceeded to the location and was assisted by other officers.
Witnesses were located and police learned the gunshot was fired from in front of the 200 block of East 7th Street. The initial investigation revealed a domestic argument had taken place between 24-year-old Kenya Atterberry and a 23-year-old female.
Police say that during the argument, Atterberry discharged a single round from a handgun. Based on evidence located at the scene, police say it appears the round struck the ground causing it to fragment and ricochet with one of the pieces striking the victim in the face. All parties then left the scene. The victim was located near 8th/Chicago and an ambulance was summoned to transport her to Franciscan Hospital for treatment. Her injury was not life threatening.
A description of the vehicle Atterberry left the scene in was obtained during the initial investigation. An officer utilized the Flock Falcon Camera system to search for the vehicle. A vehicle matching the description and color was found during the search and a license plate number was obtained. While following up on this lead, the officer was able to locate the suspect vehicle in the 100 block of Pinetree Court. Atterberry was observed walking away from the vehicle and the officer was able to take her into custody. A 9mm handgun was recovered during the arrest. Kenya Atterberry was charged with aggravated battery, domestic battery by means of a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness. Bond was set at $25,000.
