A 16-year old has died after a crash that occurred Thursday morning in LaPorte County.
Just after 7:10 a.m. deputies were dispatched to the intersection of U.S. 6 and County Road 425 West in reference to a crash. Deputies were advised a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) and pickup truck were the involved vehicles. The initial on-scene investigation determined that a 2019 Freightliner, driven by a 70-year-old Hobart man had been traveling east on U.S. 6. Upon approaching County Road 425 West, the CMV slowed and prepared to turn left (north) onto County Road 425 West. The CMV began completing the turn and while doing so, failed to yield to a vehicle traveling west on U.S. 6. A 1996 Ford pickup truck, being driven by Mark A. Steuer of La Porte, crashed into the trailer being pulled by the CMV.
Steuer was extricated from the pickup truck and transported to an area hospital. While still investigating the crash scene, deputies learned Steuer was pronounced deceased in the emergency room.
The CMV driver was uninjured during the crash.
Toxicology test results are pending.
The crash investigation is ongoing.
