Chesterton High School Principal Brent Martinson releases statement on racist harassment of student-from the Town of Chesterton FACEBOOK page

The Town of Chesterton has received a statement which CHS Principal Brent Martinson emailed to parents on Wednesday, Jan. 8, pertaining to the racist harassment of a student.

That statement in its entirety:
“Chesterton High School does not tolerate harassment of students for any reason, including race. In response to a recent social media post, the CHS administration wants to assure parents that when the situation was reported, it was investigated and handled immediately in alignment with the school’s Code of Conduct.
“The reported incident occurred in early December. Once reported, CHS administrators began an investigation that included interviews with several students and staff members. Recorded video footage was reviewed, and physical evidence was analyzed. CHS school resource officers were consulted throughout for support.

“As a result of the investigation, appropriate disciplinary consequences were assigned. Any future allegations will be investigated and addressed in alignment with school rules. CHS also wants to remind students and families that any future concerns can be brought to the attention of a CHS staff member or reported anonymously through the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System (SSARS), which allows students to share concerns at any time. You can reach SSARS via the school website, the hotline (844-5-SayNow), or you can download the SSARS app in the Google Play or Apple Store.

“Chesterton High School will continue to educate students on cultural awareness, respect, and responsible behavior. Staff will work proactively with students to promote empathy, accountability, and respectful communication, ensuring that all students understand their role in maintaining a safe and welcoming school environment.

“Chesterton High School remains committed to supporting all students and ensuring that our school is a safe and respectful learning environment each day.”
