Portage Mayor Austin Bonta gave the following statement on Friday regarding tree limb pickup:
“Tree limb pickup announcement:
After this weekend, we will have a company coming in that is going to take over the process of picking up the remaining tree limbs across our city. This company will be working on limbs from sunup to sundown every day, seven days a week, until all the debris has been picked up. I will have more to say in detail by Monday when it comes to how this will run and will make sure information gets our in ways beyond just Facebook.
This move allows for fast finish to the cleanup and allows our Public Works Team to be able to return to other important areas. This move allows for fast finish to the cleanup and allows our Public Works Team to be able to return to other important areas of serving our city. That said, it is extremely important to recognize the incredible job that our Street Department, Sanitation Department, Utilities Department, and our Parks Department have done to clear our roads and get so much tree debris collected from the date of the storm to now, along with the work of our coalition of companies, unions, and citizen volunteers who stepped up and got our city’s roads open at a speed that impressed many people outside our city and made sure our public safety personnel and linemen have been able to navigate.
As we head into the weekend, I will continue to post updates as I get them from NIPSCO as it comes to our city’s restoration numbers, as well as our city efforts. of serving our city.
