Early Friday morning, Michigan City Police officers were dispatched to the 100 block of E. US Hwy 20 in reference to a motor vehicle accident with possible injuries. Upon their arrival officers learned that a red 2001 Chevy Silverado was traveling eastbound on US Hwy 20 in an erratic manner when the vehicle suddenly ran off the south shoulder of the roadway just east of the intersection of Franklin Street. Upon leaving the roadway the vehicle collided with a NIPSCO utility pole before coming to a rest on its roof. As a witness attempted to render aid to the driver, the driver suddenly fled the area on foot and could not be located. Due to the fact that the NIPSCO utility pole was severely damaged, causing the utility lines to fall, US Hwy 20 was immediately closed between the intersections of Hwy 421 and Cleveland Ave to allow NIPSCO crews to repair the damaged lines. At 10:30am friday morning, NIPSCO crews completed their work and US Hwy 20 was again reopened to traffic. The suspect driver who fled the scene was described as a white male adult. Anyone with information on this accident is urged to contact the non-emergency number of the Michigan City Police Department at 219-874-3221.
