On November 3, 2019, at 8:53am, officer Zanda Chavez of the Michigan City Police Department was dispatched to the 1500 block of Kentucky St. in reference to an accident.
Upon arrival Officer Chavez observed a gray Nissan Altima that had crashed into a wall at the PowerDrive building located at 1502 Kentucky. Upon preliminary investigation she located a male subject later identified as 21-year-old Donavin Worland of Michigan City. Immediately it was determined that the driver was deceased and Michigan City Fire, EMS, and the Coroner were notified.
Upon further initial investigation it appears that the vehicle was traveling from Wall street and went through a yard located at 1507 Tennessee Street, through a side yard of 1502 Kentucky Street, and onto the grass and gravel parking lot of PowerDrive. The vehicle then struck two concrete parking barriers which turned the vehicle sideways crashing into the building a great distance off of the roadway.
A preliminary investigation at the scene called for our Traffic Division, Captain Jeff Loniewski, and Officer Brian Wright, to assist as our standard protocol involving serious bodily accidents or fatalities.
LaPorte County Coroner, Jennifer Banks arrived at the scene who assisted in the proper identification and notification of the family of Mr. Worland.
The Michigan City Police would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of Donavin Worland in this very unfortunate accident.
Assisting on scene were:
- The Michigan City Fire Department
- LaPorte County EMS
- The LaPorte County Coroner’s Office
