A student was arrested after bringing a handgun into Michigan City High School, Michigan City police announced Friday.

At the end of the school day on Sept. 12, an anonymous MCHS student provided information indicating that a 16-year-old male high school student may have brought a handgun into the school on Monday, Sept. 11. Further, the particular student was said to have shown the weapon to several other students while in one of the restrooms. A Snapchat social media video was alleged to have been made during this time depicting the incident. It is important to note that the 16-year-old student was not present in the school building after Monday Sept. 11.

Numerous interviews took place, evidence was collected, the Snapchat video was obtained, and a “parental advisement” was sent out via email and telephone to the parents of all high school students, police said.

According to a press release by the Michigan City Police Department, the results of the investigation showed that the 16-year-old student did bring a handgun into the school and displayed it to several other students while inside one of the restrooms. The Michigan City Police Department Crime Suppression Unit was contacted and tasked with locating the 16-year-old and taking the student into custody. The student was located at his residence on Sept. 13 at 6:30 p.m. The student was taken into custody by officers after a brief foot chase. The student was charged as a juvenile with unlawful carrying of a handgun on school property, pointing a firearm, criminal recklessness and child in possession of a firearm.
