A Coolspring Township man has been charged with murder following the death of a Michigan City man, according to Michigan City police.

At 8:37 p.m. on Thursday, deputies were dispatched to a residence located in the 8600 west block of County Road 400 North in reference to a battery.

While responding, deputies were advised someone had possibly been struck by a vehicle.

An officer located a man identified as 25-year-old Travis S. Clemons of Michigan City, lying motionless near a vehicle.

While personnel were rendering aid to Clemons, they discovered a gunshot wound to his torso. Emergency medical personnel arrived and transported Clemons to an area hospital for treatment.

A man standing nearby, identified as 22-year-old Dawson W. Mahoney, was detained and later transported to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division were activated and responded to the scene.

Detectives worked on the investigation throughout the remainder of the evening and into the morning hours on Friday, Oct. 20.

At around 3:10 a.m., Clemons died as a result of his injuries sustained during the incident.

A probable cause affidavit and charging information was prepared and submitted in La Porte County Superior Court I.

Probable Cause was granted and found for the arrest of Mahoney for the offense of murder.
