Yesterday, U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) attended a military service medal ceremony at the Clay County Courthouse where he presented Mr. Paul Lucas of Poland, Indiana with the Purple Heart he earned during the Korean War. Senator Young also presented Mr. Lucas with several other medals he earned, including the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with two bronze service stars, Combat Infantry Badge (1st Award), and United Nations Service Medals. Attorney General Curtis Hill announced yesterday plans to expand an innovative digital curriculum for high school students that informs them about safe use of prescription drugs and ways to avoid the risks of substance abuse. “By educating students about the dangers of prescription drugs, we can prevent tragedies and promote smart choices,” Attorney General Hill said. “Sadly, almost half of all teens incorrectly believe that prescription drugs are always safer than illegal street drugs. NIPSCO is set to complete the final phase of a three year natural gas system upgrade near Michigan City. This work is part of the company’s ongoing modernization plan to upgrade their natural gas infrastructure system. Now through Thursday, November 1, NIPSCO and their contracted crews from Minnesota Limited, LLC are commissioning a 21 mile section of their pipeline. As part of this process crews will need to burn natural gas at the south east corner of W 300 N and County Line Road near I-94 in Michigan City. The LaPorte Police Department received reports of individuals receiving emails from someone claiming to be the LaPorte Water Dept. These messages state that your water bill is overdue and that you will need to call an 800 number. The emails appear to be coming from LaPorte.org. The water department will not send out an email for overdue water bills and do not have an 800 number for you to contact. Police say this is a scam and to please delete the email if you receive one.

Friday, Michigan City Transit Director Robin Barzoni-Tillman announced significant changes to the fare structure for the Transit Triangle, as well as a closer relationship between the Transit Triangle and Michigan City Transit. Effective November 1, 2018 fares for the Transit Triangle will be reduced to $1 for a full-fare ride, and 50 cents for seniors, students, and disabled riders.
