Multiple fire departments were called to respond to a residential fire in the 700 block of 50 West in rural Liberty Township shortly before 5pm on Saturday. Deputy Fire Chief Brandon Cotton of South Haven arrived on scene with smoke showing. Deputy Chief Cotton reported the structure appearing to be vacant with flames in the rear of the structure. Firefighters made an attack on the fire and was able to quickly extinguish the fire. The fire was contained to the rear of the structure. Gary, Lake County-The vehicle and occupants involved in the shooting yesterday evening have been located and arrested.  At approximately 11:49 p.m., yesterday, Friday, September 27, 2019, the Indiana State Police received a tip about the vehicle that was purportedly involved in the shooting and the location of the occupants that were inside.  This led us to an apartment complex in Gary and the impending arrest of four males and the recovery of four weapons.  It was learned that the vehicle that was involved in the shooting had been carjacked, earlier on Friday, in Illinois by gunpoint, a gold 2017

As part of the "dogbone" interchange project at U.S. 20 and SR 2, the U.S. 20 closure will be extended from Oak Knoll Road a bit north to CR N. 600 E. starting Monday for approximately three weeks. This is so crews can work on the shoulder and install a center turn lane.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces that some ramps will close Monday at the interchange of State Road 2 and the U.S. 20/31 Bypass in South Bend while asphalt patching crews work in the area.The crew has been working between Quince Road and the Bypass this week, with one lane flowing in each direction through that corridor. Michigan City High School sophomore Savannah Holley has been selected for the 2020 Indiana All-State Honor Choir.  She will represent Michigan City High School when the choir performs at the Indiana Music Educators Convention January 17-19, 2020, in Fort Wayne. Savannah is one of only five sopranos from our region of the state who has been selected for the choir, through a competitive audition process. 

The La Porte County Drug Task Force (LCDTF) announces the arrest of an individual for Dealing Methamphetamine and Failure to Report a Dead Body.  Jesse J. In La Porte, a portion of Washington St., near the U.S. Hwy 35 overpass, is closed for bridge painting. The plan is to have it re-opened in two weeks.

In Porter County, The U.S. 20 bridge deck patching is complete, ahead of schedule in The Pines, just west of the LaPorte/Porter County line. This work was supposed to go through this week. Traffic has resumed to normal.

As part of its ongoing commitment to safety, the South Shore Line announces it will host a multi-team emergency preparedness drill on Wednesday, Oct. 23, approximately one mile east of the East Chicago Station (please see attached map).  The federally mandated drill is a key component in the SSL’s continuing efforts to familiarize first responders with railroad crisis response procedures. An observant trooper saved a Crown Point woman’s life who was choking while sitting in her car at a traffic light.Yesterday afternoon in Merrillville, Sergeant Dan Avitia was on duty in his marked police car on south bound Broadway at US 30.  Avitia was stopped at the red light in the turn lane to go east onto US 30 when he heard cars honking to the left of him. Dale Lyles to serve as the new adjutant general of the Indiana National Guard.Lyles will be promoted to the rank of brigadier general. Lyles, a native of Salem, has served most of his 32 years in the military in Indiana. A Kouts man was recently sentenced for mail fraud by a South Bend judge. United States District Court Judge Jon E. DeGuilio sentenced 42 year old for three counts of mail fraud, announced U.S. Attorney Kirsch. Thomas was sentenced to 90 months in prison followed by one year of supervised release.  Thomas was charged in 2018 with four counts of mail fraud for his role in a scheme to defraud insurance companies by arson fires. To accommodate passengers attending the Chicago Bears home game at 3:25 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 29th, the South Shore Line plans to stop select trains at Metra’s 18th Street Station, which connects passengers directly to the Soldier Field entrance via a pedestrian walkway.
