Two way conversion on Franklin Street in Michigan City Complete

Franklin Street is now a two-way thoroughfare for the first time in decades as of Monday, Nov. 25. This change is an exciting step for businesses in the Uptown Arts District, as it will improve traffic flow and parking and make Michigan City downtown shops and restaurants more easily accessible. Michigan City Thanksgiving Day Holiday Recycling Schedule

The City of Michigan City is advising residents that there will be a One Day Delay in the recycling pickup schedule for Thursday, Nov. 28 and Friday, Nov. 29. Thursday’s pickup will be Friday and Friday’s pickup will be Saturday. The city says to remember to have your toter curbside the night before or by 5:00 a.m. to insure you are picked-up. The office and Compost Site will be closed Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving Holiday and will reopen Monday, December 2nd at 8:00 a.m.

The deadline for submitting grant applications for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Lake and River Enhancement (LARE) grant is Jan. 15. The LARE program strives to protect and enhance aquatic habitat for fish and wildlife while ensuring continued accessibility of Indiana’s public lakes, rivers, and streams. Arrest made after officers find dozens of neglected animals in Dyer

A man in unincorporated Dyer faces criminal charges after law enforcement discovered he had more than two dozen pets in need of care, according to Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. Wednesday morning, the Lake County Sheriff’s Department assisted the Indiana Department of Natural Resources in serving a search warrant for suspected illegal hunting at home in the 8500 block of Sheffield. While on the property, officers observed numerous animals in distress, Martinez Jr. reported. The animals were confiscated and are being cared for at the Lake County Animal Control, the Hobart Humane Society and Humane Indiana located in Munster.

MCHS Cadets compete In national STEM game

Michigan City High School (MCHS) Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) cadets competed in CyberPatriot on November 15th.  CyberPatriot is the national cyber security game that requires students to use skills used in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields.  Participants act as cyber security managers for an organization's information management system, defending against and counter attacking a cyberattack.  Cadets Staff Sergeant Jhonatan Ruiz and Sergeant Jordan Staples attended a STEM camp this past summer just outside of Washington, DC.  The camp, to include transportation, cost the cadets nothing.  All costs were covered by the Marine Corps.

Berrien County deputies recover over 120 pounds of cocaine from truck on I-94

Berrien County deputies seized over 120 pounds of cocaine during a traffic stop on I-94 Monday, the Berrien County Sheriff's Office is reporting. On Nov. 18 deputies from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office received information of narcotics traveling through Berrien County on I-94. The Berrien County deputies located the suspected vehicle, a Freightliner tractor trailer, and initiated a traffic stop on I-94 for a traffic violation near mile marker 34 eastbound. During a search of the vehicle and trailer 50 Kilograms of cocaine was located weighing approximately 123 pounds. The approximate street value of the substance is 1.5 million dollars.
