Just before 11:30 p.m. Sunday, Trooper William Stancy responded to a single vehicle crash on I-80/94 west bound to Cline Ave. south bound ramp that resulted in a fatality. Preliminary investigation revealed that a Ford Taurus was exiting off of west bound I-80/94 to south bound Cline Ave when for unknown reasons ran off the roadway just before the curve on the ramp, striking the concrete barrier wall between the ramp and mainline west bound I-80/94. Mayor Ron Meer of the City of Michigan City will host the 2019 Enchanted City Mayor’s Ball. The proceeds will benefit Lubeznik Center for the Arts and Friendship Botanic Gardens. The Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) announced a record-breaking year for small business growth Friday with the Indiana Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and Indiana Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) helping launch 318 small businesses and secure $86.3 million in government contracts for Indiana businesses, respectively, in 2018. Together, the Indiana SBDC and Indiana PTAC assisted small businesses in the creation of 1,554 new jobs. Along with leading Indiana's economic development efforts, the IEDC, which recently celebrated a second-consecutive, record-breaking year for new job commitments, works to support entrepreneurs and small businesses through the Indiana SBDC and Indiana PTAC networks.

Beginning 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 29th through 3:00 p.m. Friday, February 1st., troopers responded to numerous crashes, slide offs and assisting motorists calls.The concentrated area of problems was Interstate I-80/94 and I-65 through Lake, Porter, La Porte, Newton and Jasper Counties. The Senate Committee on Corrections and Criminal Law heard Sen. Koch’s SB 186 on enhancing penalties for some traffic crimes, like Operating While Intoxicated crimes and Leaving the Scene of the Accident, and consecutive sentencing for certain OWI crimes. The bill was amended in hearing to create a new crime of OWI resulting in catastrophic injury. This will carry the same penalty as OWI causing death. A representative from the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council, victims, and and two county prosecutors testified in support of the bill. A representative from the Indiana Public Defenders Council testified in opposition of the bill.

February is American Heart Month, and the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) encourages all Hoosiers to use the observance as an incentive to lowering their risk of developing life-threatening heart disease.
