The Association of Indiana Counties (AIC) and Bliss McKnight, Inc. have named a local fourth grader as the National County Government Week essay contest winner for the AIC’s Northwest District. Madeleine McCarther’s essay was chosen over entries from other fourth graders across the district. McCarther, a student at Saint Stanislaus School, received $100 for winning the contest. One winner was chosen in each of the AIC’s six districts from among several hundred submitted from across the state. Today through Friday and April 30th-May 4th, the South Shore Line will temporarily be busing weekday (Mon-Fri) passengers between Carroll Ave. and the South Bend International Airport while crews upgrade sections of track and overhead wire. During these periods, there will be no train service to or from Hudson Lake, and Trains 401, 422 and 424 between South Bend and Carroll Ave. will be canceled. NOTE: No bikes will be transported via bus for Trains 6 and 11. Train service between Carroll Ave. and Chicago will not be impacted.

Indiana’s unemployment rate stands at 3.2 percent for March and remains lower than the national rate of 4.1 percent. The monthly unemployment rate is a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicator that reflects the number of unemployed people seeking employment within the prior four weeks as a percentage of the labor force. Indiana’s labor force had a net increase of 7,513 over the previous month. An annual report from the Virginia-based American Legislative Exchange Council Center for State Fiscal Reform ranks Indiana's economic outlook among the best in the country. The Rich States, Poor States index ranks states based on 15 variables, such as highest marginal personal income tax rate, property tax burden and worker's compensation costs. The report focuses on the economic competitiveness of states. Indiana ranks third on the list, behind only Utah and Idaho. A roll over crash late Wednesday night sent the driver and passenger to the hospital. Preliminary investigation by Trooper John Landowski revealed that a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by 20 year old Jordyn Windsor of Portage, IN was westbound on I-80/94 in the left middle lane just east of Lake Station exit when she began to change lanes. Holcomb announced 13 appointments to the state’s Governor’s Workforce Cabinet, a new group created during the 2018 legislative session to assess and realign Indiana’s workforce development programs and services. Michigan City’s elegant Barker Mansion gardens will be the setting for a Mother’s Day painting class on Saturday, May 12. Artist Esther Lundmark of Lundmark Studios will facilitate the class. The Lutheran Foundation , through their mental health initiative, LookUpIndiana.org (LookUp), has partnered with members of the Regional Mental Health Coalition of Northeast Indiana to produce a video series titled “Today’s Drugs”. The objective of the video series is to educate the community on the dangers of today’s drugs. Drug poisoning deaths have increased dramatically over the last 5 years. Michigan City High School art students recently created a mural in Barker Mansion’s lower level. The artwork features a Haskell and Barker Car Company logo from the 1800’s, which was found on letterhead in the mansion’s archives. Students completing the mural were senior Kara Davis, and sophomores Alexis Reynolds and Armani Torrance-Worlds. Art instructors Deanna Ehrhardt and Sue Cleveland supervised the project. “Painting at Barker Mansion was a very positive experience. The employees were very friendly which made the atmosphere welcoming, and I was also fortunate to be able to roam the historical halls at the mansion,” said Reynolds, who also

Operation Stop Scams continues in Indiana and across the nation this week. It's sponsored by A-A-R-P and features a month-long series of events in communities coast-to-coast to fight fraud. They include paper-shredding opportunities and fraud-education programs. The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office and the La Porte County DUI Task Force are announcing that it will be increasing enforcement and patrols around prom and post-prom sites this spring. The goal is to deter alcohol use and eliminate alcohol related crashes among La Porte County high school prom attendees. After two grueling days of competing robots, robotics team 1747 - Harrison Boiler Robotics from West Lafayette, robotics team 868 - TechHOUNDS from Carmel, and robotics team 3936 - RoboBlitz from Michigan City have emerged as champions from the IndianaFIRST State Championship. In order to win, these teams were required to face 31 other teams from across Indiana in a series of qualification matches. The Michigan City Chamber Music Festival (MCCMF) will present a concert on Sunday, May 6, 3:00 p.m., 1st Presbyterian Church, Michigan City, IN.  The program is titled “Viola Virtuosity,” and features two of the world’s finest viola players; Rudolf Haken and Istvan Szabo.
