A Michigan City man has been arrested for being a “serious violent felon in possession of a firearm” after an argument led to him allegedly firing a gun Saturday night, according to the Michigan City Police Department. On Saturday Nov. 16, just before 7:30 p.m., the LaPorte County Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call in reference to gunshots being fired in the area of West 7th Street and Grant Avenue. Yesterday, Rep. Frank J. Mrvan announced federal grant awards for the City of Michigan City, the City of Whiting, and the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) under the Department of Transportation's (DOT) Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant program. The Michigan City High School (MCHS) Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) hosted a military drill competition on November 16th at the school’s gym. Schools from Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Romeoville, IL and Portage competed. Judges came from the University of Illinois-Chicago ROTC. MCHS earned third place trophies in Color Guard (Armed Division) and Armed Regulation. The two-way conversion of Franklin Street is underway in Michigan City The City of Michigan City announced that as of Friday morning, striping has commenced along Franklin Street north of Ninth Street. The western lane of Franklin will remain closed through Sunday, Nov. 24. When it reopens on Monday, Nov. 25, it will do so as a southbound lane, effectively converting this segment of Franklin Street to a two-way throughfare for the first time in decades.

Local police officers graduated from the Northern Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, Class 24-52 on Friday. Among the group was Valparaiso Police Department Patrol Officer, Joshua Hart, who served as a squad leader and earned a second place honor in overall academic achievement. Portage Police Department Officers Logan Johnson, Andrew Atchison, Logan Rhodes, and Trevor Leonhardt also were among those who graduated. A Portage resident has died after being struck by multiple vehicles at the intersection of US 20 and Samuelson Road, according to the Portage Police Department. On Wednesday Nov. 13, at around 5:37 p.m., officers of the Portage Police Department responded to the intersection of U.S. Highway 20 and Samuelson Road in reference to a report that a pedestrian was struck by a motor vehicle. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness announced results of the 2024 Point-in-Time (PIT) Count, which show a record low in Veteran homelessness since measurement began in 2009 and a 13% decrease in Indiana since 2023. Nationwide, the data shows a 11.7% reduction in Veterans experiencing homelessness since 2020 and a 55.6% reduction since 2010. The PIT Count is an annual count of sheltered and unsheltered people experiencing homelessness on a single night in January. Michigan City police are investigating a shooting that left one person injured on Thursday. At around 9:30 p.m. Thursday officers responded to the 700 block of East 10th Street for shots that were fired in the area. Officers arrived and learned multiple people fled the area on foot and in vehicles. No victim was found at the scene. Shortly after the call, a victim drove their vehicle to Michigan City Police Department and met with officers. As people begin to plan for Thanksgiving holiday travel, the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) is preparing to increase patrol visibility as part of the annual Safe Family Travel campaign.
