A recent gun drive provided a straightforward, efficient, and easy way to dispose of unwanted and unused guns that will be DESTROYED not allowing collected guns to re-enter circulation. The Michigan City Police Department took in a total of 145 GUNS over a two-day period. After using sponsored funds by Horizon Bank and our Community Outreach Donation Fund to supplement Day #2 the drive ended after three hours. As former Members of Congress and elected officers are using their former positions to lobby Congress, Friday U.S. Senator Mike Braun (R-IN) and U.S. Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) are introducing the Banning Lobbying and Safeguarding Trust (BLAST) Act. Scott said the bill “imposes a permanent ban on members of Congress becoming lobbyists.” This legislation is a companion bill to legislation introduced by Rep. Trey Hollingsworth (R-IN-9), H.R.1145.

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) will host two public meetings to answer any questions and receive comments about the 2019 State Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan update. The State Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan lays the foundation to building resilience in the State of Indiana by identifying Indiana's greatest risks for disasters and creating strategies to mitigate these risks. This plan is required to be updated every five years by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The public meetings will be held in Indianapolis. The draft plan also will be made available online to the public for review and comment after March 8.

Warren, who uses the aliases of Kristiana Kendall and Heather Czizek, is a wanted person by the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office for Forgery, Identity Deception, False Statement and Driving While Suspended. South Shore Line will be offering 10% discounts on monthly passes during the month of March. During the polar vortex, South Shore Line services were suspended for several days due to the extreme temperatures. Crews ran tests throughout the day and night during this time to determine whether rail lines were safe. Unfortunately, the record-breaking temperatures caused problems ranging from downed electrical lines on South Shore Line’s tracks to damage on Metra Electric District tracks that the SSL runs on in Illinois, resulting in cancelled service on both train lines. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces that a bridge deck replacement project is set to begin March 4 on U.S. 35 in the City of LaPorte. The bridge, which is adjacent to the courthouse in downtown LaPorte and just north of State Road 2 (Lincoln Way), will maintain one lane of traffic in each direction for the duration of the project. An emergency closing of the Franklin Street Bridge in Michigan City has been declared by the County Commission President and Council President. In advance of the U.S. 35 (Simcox) overpass deck reconstruction starting next week, INDOT will be temporarily closing northbound lanes on the overpass starting at 9:00 a.m. Friday morning, March 1, 2019. The closure is expected to last a couple of hours while they access a manhole.Northbound and southbound traffic will be routed down to one lane each during this time. Trucks and arrow lights will be present to direct traffic. Motorists traveling in the area should anticipate traffic congestion and delays. Drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes.

The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office is announcing two significant recent arrests, both of which occurred on Tuesday, February 19, 2019, along US Highway 20. Just after 1 AM, Deputy Austin Wells initiated a traffic stop on a passenger vehicle on US 20, just east of State Road (SR) 39. Upon Deputy Wells making contact with the three occupants of the vehicle, he summoned a K-9 to the scene. Nearly a year after a massive national anti-gun violence event, students in Indiana are continuing their fight. A March for Our Lives rally will be held today at noon at the Statehouse in support of pending legislation to require background checks on all gun sales.
