At an event last week with Mayor Ron Meer and Indiana Finance Director Dan Huge at Millennium Park, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that the Michigan City Sanitary District will receive a $600,000 Brownfields environmental Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund, and Cleanup grant. This grant will fund environmental investigations of properties throughout the city. EPA’s grant is made in partnership with the Michigan City Redevelopment Commission to continue the redevelopment of recreational areas near Trail Creek and promote job creation by reclaiming former industrial properties in the Monon Corridor. Last week, a La Porte County resident received a telephone call from the non-emergency number of the Sheriff’s Office (219-326-7700). The citizen described the caller as being a male subject with a Middle Eastern accent. The citizen advised the subject indicated that he was representing a law firm. The caller attempted to solicit monies and identifying information, such as name and date of birth, from the citizen. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $350,000 to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to implement a nearshore bird management program at Jeorse Park, Buffington Harbor, Whihala, and Hammond beaches on the shoreline of Lake Michigan in Northwest Indiana. The beaches are located within the Grand Calumet River area of concern, one of 43 toxic hotspots identified by the United States and Canada in the Great Lakes basin. Today crews are setting up phase 1 of the Ohio Street reconstruction project. This phase will close the Southbound (Westside) of Ohio Street from US 20 to 400 North (Kieffer Rd). All traffic on Ohio Street will be one way only (Northbound) until further notice, approximately the end of September. Two adults and seven children were injured in a single vehicle crash that occurred this morning, when the driver fell asleep. Preliminary investigation by Trooper Nicole Maenza revealed, at approximately 3:00 a.m., this Sunday, April 29, 2018, morning a 2007 Dodge Nitro (SUV), driven by Blair Beathea, 31 of South Bend, IN, was east bound on I-80/94 at the 37.5 mile marker (this is approximately 2 ½ miles east of the Michigan City exit), when she fell asleep. The La Porte County Drug Task Force announces the arrest of four individuals, for various charges including two separate narcotics, and weapons related cases. The first investigation resulted in the arrest of Cameo M. CRAWFORD (20) of Michigan City on Wednesday April 18th, 2018, after an arrest warrant was issued for his arrest by La Porte County Superior Court #1 for Dealing in Cocaine Level 3 Felony. Purdue University Northwest (PNW) received a record $1,058,979 in contributions during Wednesday’s (4/25) fifth annual Purdue Northwest Day of Giving, shattering the previous year’s total by more than $100,000 for the 24-hour, social media-driven giving campaign. This year’s total was the tenth highest from among 60 various participating groups across the entire Purdue system, resulting in additional “bonus money” awarded to Purdue Northwest. Some 607 donor gifts to PNW contributed to a single-day giving total of $37.6 million across the entire Purdue system—an amazing fourth consecutive year for most dollars raised in a college/university single-day campaign.

Wednesday, Sheriff John T. Boyd and Michigan City Police Chief Mark Swistek hosted an active shooter tabletop exercise at Michigan City Town Hall.
