In January, the Michigan City Police Department and the Indiana State Board of Accounts began a joint investigation into an overpayment from the Michigan City Police Department’s pension fund. It was reported thatpension funds were being deposited into an account belonging to a deceased beneficiary. Through the course of the joint investigation, it was determined that the beneficiary passed away in 2015, however; the pension board was not notified of their passing. On Saturday September 12th at approximately 11:45 P.M., MCPD Shift 3 Patrol Officers were dispatched to the area of East Michigan Blvd. and Warnke Road for a pedestrian that was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. Officers arrived and found a 46-year-old female unresponsive in the roadway being tended to by civilians that were in the area when the accident occurred. Officers began assisting with life saving measures until La Porte County EMS arrived. MedFlight was then summoned and transported the victim to an area hospital for treatment. On September 10th around 7pm, the Chesterton Police Department received a report of a driver being pulled over near Dogwood park by a subject presenting themselves as a Police Officer.  Officers on scene determined that no Police agencies working in the county had any reports of an officer making a traffic stop in that area around the time of the incident.  The driver of the vehicle stated that a dark SUV had pulled behind them with a red and blue flashing light on the front of the vehicle. Michigan City Police Department welcomed Officer Steve Wiegel and K9 Axel back to MCPD, as they have successfully completed their training and certification of the North American Police Work Dog Association. The Indiana Department of Workforce Development (DWD) will begin making Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) payments to eligible claimants beginning the week of Monday, Sept. 21. LWA is funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). LWA funding will only cover the six-week period from the week ending Aug. 1 to the week ending Sept. 5. Two City of La Porte police officers were promoted this week, according to Chief Paul Brettin. Captain Joe Blake has been with the department for 15 years, and has served as a detective, field training officer and field training director. He is also a United States Air Force veteran. The City of La Porte Water Department will begin its biannual water system flushing this weekend, according to Water Superintendent Tim Werner. Beginning Sunday, Sept. 13 and continuing for the next three to four weeks, crews will be out to flush fire hydrants throughout the community between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sunday through Friday. Recently a group of vintage car enthusiasts from Four A’s Car Club turned out at the Orak Shrine in Michigan City to donate $1,500.00 for the Shriners Children's Hospital.
