The Michigan City Police Department released the following statement on golf cart use: "The Michigan City Police Department would like to remind our residents and visitors that golf carts are not allowed to be operated on any public roadways. Summer weather has finally arrived and with it came several complaints reference golf carts traveling on the public roadways in the lakefront corridor. The safety of everyone on the roadways is of the utmost importance. PORTER COUNTY, Ind. - An Indiana Department of Transportation contractor Enneking Pressure Cleaning will close U.S. 6 between Mander Road and County Road 350 East on or after Monday, June 23. U.S. 6 will be closed for approximately one week for a bridge deck overlay preventative maintenance project over CSX Railroad. Motorists should seek alternate routes. The official detour will follow State Road 49 and State Road 2.

The City of Valparaiso has announced the availability of a number of community organizations to offer cooling centers to help keep the city safe during this week’s heat wave. “We encourage people to visit these cooling centers and to check on those who may not have functioning air conditioning,” said Mayor Jon Costas. Michigan City police rescued a victim and arrested a man who they say was an armed felon after an incident Wednesday night, according to the Michigan City Police Department. In the early hours of Wednesday, June 18, officers with the Michigan City Police Department were dispatched to an “unknown problem” at the 500 block of Tremont Street in Michigan City. “What began as a routine call for service quickly evolved into a major criminal investigation, thanks to the swift response and sharp instincts of ‘night shift’ officers,” MCPD said in a press release. Four people were arrested after a shooting investigation, according to the Michigan City Police Department. On June 10, Michigan City police officers responded to a “shots fired” complaint at the 200 block of Loran Road in Michigan City. When officers arrived, they discovered that a dispute between two individuals had escalated into gunfire, with the suspect firing multiple rounds into the victim’s vehicle in broad daylight. Several members of the public witnessed the incident as it unfolded. The case was assigned to MCPD’s Crime Suppression Unit (CSU). Conservation officers at the DNR are recognizing the staff of the Indiana Dunes National Park after a water rescue occurred Thursday. Thursday afternoon National Park life guards rescued three people from the waters of Lake Michigan. The DNR says conservation officers would like to remind everyone to be careful when swimming in any body of water, be mindful of the weather forecast, and know your own limitations while in the water.

The Portage Streets and Sanitation Department gave a tree limb update report Wednesday. Today, limb crews will remain working in Zone 2. The crews completed 139 sizable piles.  One limb crew that was servicing zone 3 focused on the small limb piles that can be handled avoiding a large grapple truck.  They completed 89 small limb piles yesterday. Street department work zones NOT garbage day routes and have no association with trash service.   The street zones are the same in leaf service, snow removal and limb pickup. Michigan City police made an arrest Monday night after gunshot detection technology alerted them to an area where they found 72 shell casings and a man hiding. Just after 10:30 p.m., the Flock Raven gunshot detection system alerted to shots being fired near the 100 block of Seymour Avenue. Multiple officers responded to the area as well as a deputy from the Long Beach Police Department. The responding officers were approached by several neighborhood residents who indicated they heard multiple gunshots being fired.
