LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. - An Indiana Department of Transportation contractor will have alternating lane closures on State Road 4/Monroe St between State Road 2/Lincolnway and Boyd Blvd starting on or after Tuesday, September 3. Work will include patching and resurfacing, curb and gutter replacement where necessary, and ADA compliant sidewalk ramps. The roadway will be reduced to one lane and flaggers will direct traffic in the area where work is occurring. Temporary closures for sidewalks and intersecting crossroads will also be necessary during ADA ramp reconstruction. This project will be ongoing through late November. Michigan City, IN – Friday, the Michigan City Police Department joined Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch and Congressman Frank J. Mrvan to highlight the use of federal funding for the Michigan City Police Department. Congressman Mrvan’s request for federal Community Project Funding for the Michigan City Police Department was approved in the Fiscal Year 2024 Appropriations law. Specifically, the Michigan City Police Department will receive $180,000 to upgrade technology and equipment. These upgrades will improve efficiencies within the Michigan City Police Department and enhance officers’ efforts to effectively investigate and solve crimes. The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that recently, several bronze markers located on headstones of deceased veterans in the Union Mills and Rolling Prairie Cemeteries have been stolen.  The stolen makers are those that are affixed to the back of a headstone, similar to that of the provided picture. “You are encouraged to visit the gravesites of any family members and friends who are deceased veterans with similar bronze markers to insure theirs has not been tampered with and is still present,” the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “If you observe suspicious activity around

The new Chesterton Police Department is officially open for business at their new station located at 791 Broadway. During their normal business hours (8 AM - 4 PM, Monday through Friday), the front lobby will be open to the public. The public entrance is located at the corner of 8th St. and Broadway. The Michigan City Department of Water Works will begin the semi-annual fire hydrant flushing on Monday Sept. 9. This is done to insure the hydrants are in working order for the fall and winter months. The Department of Water Works says the program should take approximately eight weeks to complete. The department also says if anyone should experience any discoloration in their water, they should let the water run for a short time and the water will clear.  

Paving will occur in Michigan City today at the following locations: -- Warnke Road from Johnrue Avenue to State Road 212 -- Golf Lane from Rogers Avenue to the East Dead End -- Golfview Road from South Dead End to Warnke Road Paving will continue on Tuesday, Sept. 3. The Indiana Secured School Safety Board (the Board) today approved the distribution of more than $24 million to support school safety initiatives in all 92 counties. Press release, United States Attorney’s Office Northern District of Indiana: SOUTH BEND – Dorian Baker, 57 years old, of South Bend, Indiana, was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Cristal C. Brisco after pleading guilty to being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, announced United States Attorney Clifford D. Johnson. Baker was sentenced to 70 months in prison followed by 2 years of supervised release. According to documents in the case, in February 2024, investigators recovered six firearms, large capacity magazines, over 40 grams of marijuana, and a digital scale from Baker’s bedroom. JASPER COUNTY, Ind. - Indiana Department of Transportation maintenance crews will be conducting spot paving operations on I-65 northbound between mile marker 217 and 224. I-65 northbound will be reduced to one lane in the area where work is occurring. Work will be conducted between the hours of approximately 5 a.m. to 12 p.m. on weekdays through Friday, September 6.
