Monday morning in Lake County, Indiana State Trooper Griffin was patrolling near the intersection of Broadway and 48th St.  A silver Nissan Altima disregarded a stop light and as a result Trooper Griffin initiated a traffic stop.  The vehicle failed to stop and a brief pursuit took place.  The vehicle stopped at 45th and Maryland where both male occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody.  One of the occupants was a juvenile and the driver has been identified as 20 year old Jelani D. On Sunday August 9th, 2020 at approximately 11:00 P.M., the La Porte County Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call stating that a female was unconscious at 315 N Ashland Avenue in Michigan City’s Eastport Neighborhood. Shift 3 Patrol Officers arrived on scene to find a female who had suspected stab and laceration wounds to her chest and neck. Emergency lifesaving measures were attempted but proved to be unsuccessful as the female had succumbed to her injuries. The victim was identified as 68-year-old Doris Hull of 315 N Ashland Avenue. To help lower Indiana's high maternal and infant mortality rates, State Rep. Jim Pressel (R-Rolling Prairie) said there are new resources available for Hoosier moms and their newborns. With the seventh-highest infant mortality rate in the nation, more than 600 Hoosier babies died before their first birthday in 2017, according to the Indiana State Department of Health. Indiana also has one of the highest maternal mortality rates. The South Shore Line will be busing passengers between Carroll Ave. and the South Bend International Airport while we upgrade our track and segments of overhead wire between Michigan City and South Bend.   The temporary busing period is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 10, through Friday, Aug. 14, 2020.  During this time, train service between Carroll Ave. and South Bend will be canceled, with buses arriving and departing with passengers to match our weekday train schedule between Carroll Ave. and South Bend.   Please note that bus service to and from Hudson Lake Station will not be available during this time.

The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) today announced that 1,253 additional Hoosiers have been diagnosed with COVID-19 through testing at ISDH, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and private laboratories. That brings to 72,254 the total number of Indiana residents known to have the novel coronavirus following corrections to the previous day’s dashboard. A total of 2,821 Hoosiers are confirmed to have died from COVID-19, an increase of 10 over the previous day. South Central Schools announced Chromebook pickup will take place on Monday, August 10th from 8:00am - 6:00pm and Tuesday, August 11th from 8:00am - 3:00pm. OFFICE OF MAYOR DUANE PARRY City of Michigan City Mayor Parry has made the decision to re-open the Washington Park Zoo on an appointment only basis beginning Friday August 7th, amending his original order.  The Zoo will be open to the public by APPOINTMENT ONLY from 10 am-4 pm with gates closing at 2:30pm. A driver was arrested for OWI on Monday in Valparaiso after getting stuck on railroad tracks according to police. At approximately 1:00 a.m., Patrolman Redmon was dispatched to the area of Nickel Plate Ave. and Axe Ave. due to the report of a vehicle being stuck on the railroad tracks.  He observed the vehicle 300 meters west of the crossing and noted it was still occupied.  Ptrl. Redmon further noted that an eastbound train was approaching the vehicle., as the train horn was sounding.  Ptrl. INDOT announced a road closure for Indianapolis Blvd (U.S. 12/20) in East Chicago between Riley Rd and McShane Ave from approximately 6 p.m. on Friday, August 7 to 6 a.m. on Saturday, August 8. The contractor performing work on the Indianapolis Blvd lift bridge over Lake George Canal will need to have the bridge lifted during those overnight hours. Drivers should seek an alternate route.

This WWII B-17 is one of only five currently flying. Both LaPorte Municipal Airport and Sentimental Journey are celebrating their 75th anniversary. In fact, Saturday August 15 will be the 75th anniversary of VJ Day. There will be tours available during the week, and rides on the weekend. They will be arriving on Monday morning, August 10 at 11 am Central, and are making themselves available to the media at that time.

Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s largest fundraiser every year. However, due to COVID-19, the American Cancer Society has reinvented the event this year. The walking, running, and fundraising by teams in La Porte County will be taking place as a “virtual” event. In Berrien County this past Thursday, a few minutes before 9pm eastern, first responders were called to the Warren Dunes State Park for a water rescue involving a 13 year old girl from Otsego, Michigan that was missing and last seen in the water. First Responders and the U.S. Coast Guard conducted a search for the victim but were unable to locate the female in the water. The search was suspended after dark and resumed the following morning. In New Buffalo this past Thursday, just after 7:30 pm eastern, first responders were dispatched to the New Buffalo City Beach to assist with a subject who had gone missing in the water near the US Corp of Engineers break wall. Rescuer’s searched the water and the rocks in the break wall and were unable to locate the individual. The missing individual is a 24 year old from Villa Ridge, Missouri, who was a contractor working in the area. A helicopter and UAV were used to do aerial searches. The Michigan City Police Department (MCPD) currently has two K9 Officers: Officer Mike Petrie and his K9 Edo and Corporal Mike Oberle and his K9 Axel. K9 Edo is a one-year-old Belgium Malinois that was born in Poland. K9Edo is certified in the detection of illegal drugs, tracking, criminal apprehension, and article/area searches. K9 Axel is a 4-year-old German Shepherd that was born in Hungary. K9 Axel is also certified in the detection of illegal drugs, tracking, criminal apprehension, and article/area searches. Due to some unfortunate circumstances, Corporal Oberle is unable to continue to be the handler for K9 Axel.

City Hall will continue to do business online and over the phone throughout the next month, according to La Porte Mayor Tom Dermody. Dermody said City Hall was set to open by appointment only starting August 3. However, Governor Eric Holcomb announced Thursday that Indiana will remain at Stage 4.5 on the Back on Track Indiana plan until the end of August.
