NIPSCO Encourages Local Nonprofits to Apply for Environmental Action Grant

NIPSCO is accepting applications for its environmental action grant to support local nonprofit organizations with environmental initiatives. In its fifth year, NIPSCO’s Environmental Action Grant aims to provide funding for restoration and education projects throughout northern Indiana. Prior-year funding recipients included environmental groups, community groups, schools and other nonprofit organizations. In 2019, the NIPSCO Environmental Action Grant funded 15 projects with a total of $50,000. Projects included habitat, shoreline, pond and wetland restoration; outdoor and environmental education; native seed planting; and more. Grants are available in the amount of $500 to $5,000 for organizations seeking funds for environmental restoration projects

Another Fatal Crash In LaPorte County

Yesterday just before 9 AM, deputies were summoned to the 2100 north block of Wozniak Road, in Coolspring Township, for a motor vehicle crash. Deputies arrived and located a passenger vehicle off the east side of Wozniak Road, south of Orchard Drive. The crash investigation determined that a 2015 Nissan had been traveling south on Wozniak Road. For an unknown reason, the vehicle drove left of center and across the northbound lane, left the traveled portion of the roadway and struck a NIPSCO utility pole, before coming to rest. Road Closure – SR 2 in Porter County

SR 2 is scheduled to close Friday in Porter County, between CR S 275 W and CR S 300 W in Valparaiso for utility relocation ahead of an upcoming construction project. The road is anticipated to be closed for approximately two weeks.

GOVERNOR HOLCOMB TO SURVEY DAMAGE TO INDIANA COMMUNITIES ALONG LAKE MICHIGAN SHORELINE

State Representative Mara Candelaria Reardon (D-Munster) pressed Governor Eric Holcomb to visit communities in Northwest Indiana along the Lake Michigan shoreline that have experienced costly damage to infrastructure due to record-high water levels and erosion. SHERIFF’S OFFICE INVESTIGATES SINGLE VEHICLE FATALITY CRASH

             On February 13, 2020, at approximately 3:42 PM, deputies were summoned to State Road (SR) 39 and County Road 1650 South, located in rural Prairie Township, reference a motor vehicle crash.  Deputy Alex Pishkur arrived minutes later and located a passenger vehicle off the east side of SR 39, north of CR 1650 South.  The crash investigation determined that a gold 2000 Lexus had been traveling north on SR 39.  For an unknown reason, the vehicle left the northbound lane of SR 39 and drove along a grassy area near the shoulder of the roadway for approximately 159 feet

Rolling Prairie Resident Donates 43 Acres to Shirley Heinze Land Trust

Shirley Heinze Land Trust announces that it has received a donation of 43 acres of land in Galena Township, north of Rolling Prairie, in LaPorte County. Arthur Schuck made the gift. He and his late wife Frances operated the Sun Acre Fruit Farm, an orchard that was in business for more than 50 years, on a portion of the donated land. The property consists of 36 acres of mature deciduous forest habitat, including upland forest, mesic forest, open water habitat, seeps, and emergent marsh wetlands, along with 7 acres of former agricultural land. Pressel to host legislative update meeting Saturday

State Rep. Jim Pressel (R-Rolling Prairie) will host a public meeting Saturday, Feb. 15, to hear feedback from members of the community and discuss the status of important legislation.The meeting will take place from 11 a.m. to noon at the Henry F. Domestic Highway Enforcement Traffic Stop Yields Significant Marijuana Seizure

La Porte County Sheriff’s Office announced that on Tuesday afternoon, Deputy Wade Wallace was working the Domestic Highway Enforcement (DHE) program along the Indiana Toll Road (I-80/90).  At approximately 3:22 P.M., he began to travel eastbound behind a passenger vehicle near the 53-mile marker. While behind the vehicle, Deputy Wallace observed several traffic violations being committed.Deputy Wallace initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle near the 56-mile marker.  The driver was identified as 31 year old Zhaoyao Luo, of Sacramento, California. Chevy Blazer Collides With Disabled Semi, Killing One

Indiana State Police is investigating a fatal crash on Interstate 94 westbound near the 37 mile marker.  This is 3 miles east of the Michigan City exit 34.  The crash occurred at 1:52 PM of February 12, 2020.  The crash involved a semi truck and a sport utility vehicle.  Initial investigation by Master Trooper Jeff Council indicated that a 1999 Kenworth semi truck was pulled off onto the right shoulder, disabled.  A black Chevrolet Blazer then struck the semi truck from behind.  At this point, it is unknown what caused the Blazer to leave the roadway, but the semi was disabled
