Police Pursuit On I-94 Crosses Into Michigan, Arrest Made

Tuesday morning the Berrien County Public Safety Dispatch Center received information of a pursuit involving the Hobart Police Department and LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office that occurred on I-94 eastbound. The pursuit of a Silver Ford Taurus was terminated on eastbound I-94 at the state-line. As officers got off at Exit #1 in New Buffalo Township to turnaround they observed that the suspect vehicle had crashed into a sign post in front of McDonald’s. Information was obtained that the driver of the vehicle left the scene of the crash and had fled on foot and may have gotten into a pick-up

AG Curtis Hill urges Congress to take action against robocalls

Yesterday, Attorney General Curtis Hill urged the U.S. Senate to enact the Telephone Robocall Abuse Criminal Enforcement and Deterrence (TRACED) Act, legislation to curb illegal robocalls and spoofing. A coalition of 54 attorneys general sent a letter to the U. S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation supporting the TRACED Act. The legislation is sponsored by Sens. John Thune, R-S.D., and Ed Markey, D-Mass. In their letter, the attorneys general state that the TRACED Act enables states, federal regulators and telecom providers to take steps to combat these illegal calls. The legislation will require voice service providers to participate

Campground hosts needed at DNR properties

Several of Indiana's state parks, state-forest and state-recreation properties are looking for volunteers to serve as campground hosts in exchange for free camping during their service.Hosts work a minimum of 20 hours per week. The volunteer period length varies at properties based on the number of applicants and on the amount and type of work required.Properties are looking for dedicated campers who enjoy working outdoors, as well as with people and DNR staff. Fatal Accident Involving Semi on 80/94

One person is dead after crashing into a semi causing their car to catch on fire when they were unable to escape. Preliminary investigation by Trooper Justin Hansen revealed at approximately 9:45 P.M., Tuesday, March 5, 2019, evening, a passenger vehicle was west bound on I-80/94 at the 18 mile marker (this is one mile west of the Portage exit), at a high rate of speed, when for unknown reasons hit the rear of a semi. IDHS will host public meetings to discuss State Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) will host two public meetings to answer any questions and receive comments about the 2019 State Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan update.The State Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan lays the foundation to building resilience in the State of Indiana by identifying Indiana's greatest risks for disasters and creating strategies to mitigate these risks. This plan is required to be updated every five years by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The public meetings will be held in Indianapolis.The draft plan also will be made available online to the public for review and comment after March 8.

2019 Washington Park Annual Parking Sticker Distribution

The Michigan City Parks & Recreation Department announced that beginning Mon, April 1, Washington Park 2019 parking stickers will be issued at the North Pointe Pavilion in Washington Park, located at 6 on the Lake. Michigan City Man Arrested For Marijuana and Handgun Following Traffic Stop

Michigan City Police Captain Jeff Loniewski conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of South Woodland Avenue and Welnetz Road on February 28th, 2019 at approximately 11:44 AM. He identified the driver as 21-year-old Michigan City resident Armahni Jackson. It was discovered during the traffic stop that Mr. Jackson was in possession of a handgun and marijuana. Mr. Jackson did not have a license to carry the handgun and his driving privileges were suspended after having a prior conviction. Michigan City Franklin Street Bridge Emergency Closure

An emergency closing of the Franklin Street Bridge in Michigan City has been declared by the County Commission President and Council President. Due to structural damage caused by the recent record-breaking arctic temperatures across our area, the Franklin Street Bridge will be closed immediately to all traffic-both vehicular and pedestrian.
