NICTD is evaluating properties that may be affected by the West Lake Corridor Project. They will be holding two open houses that will allow residents who will be potentially impacted to meet with representatives and discuss any questions in regards to the West Lake Corridor project. U.S. Reps. Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.), Susie Lee (D-Nev.), Doug Collins (R-Ga.), and Chrissy Houlahan (D-Pa.) introduced bipartisan legislation to improve health care coverage for newborn children of veterans yesterday. The Newborn Care Improvement Act would allow the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to provide care for newborns for 14 days, doubling the current limit of seven days. The Newborn Care Improvement Act would allow the VA to provide 14 days of post-delivery care to the newborn child of a woman veteran who is receiving VA maternity care. The child must have been delivered in a VA facility or another facility

A community-based CPR course that includes the practice and demonstration of CPR skills, AED use, use of barrier devices, choking rescue skills, information about the chain of survival and EMS activation. U.S. Senators Todd Young (R-Ind.), Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), and Doug Jones (D-Ala.) yesterday introduced bipartisan legislation to make sure that more students have access to higher education. Under current law, students only find out how much financial aid they will receive right before attending college. The Early Pell Promise Act provides more financial certainty for families by pre-qualifying certain students for full Pell Grant support starting as early as the eighth grade. It also ensures that families and students who pre-qualify for aid receive additional information about the cost of college attendance and student financial aid. Modeled after successful Promise Programs

The natural childbirth class is for expectant parents who are interested in a non-medicated birth plan. This class will provide physical and emotional coping techniques how to practice hands-on comfort measures.  The class is the third Tuesday of every other month, in the Birthing & Family Care Center on the second floor of La Porte Hospital. Camp leaders are announcing, the application process for the 2019 Northwest Regional Sheriff's Camp is now closed. They are however still allowing applicants to send in applications without a check to be 'wait-listed,' in the even that there are openings. Any applications received or postmarked will be wait-listed and will be notified by July 19th if there is an opening for them. Porter County Sheriff’s Office stated that those that have applied and sent in checks will be hearing from assigned camp counselors in the next month.

Yesterday, U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) announced that Evansville Regional Airport and Fort Wayne International Airport will each receive Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airport Improvement Program (AIP) supplemental grants totaling $18.1 million. The South Shore Line plans to periodically bus passengers between Carroll Ave. and the South Bend Airport while they upgrade track and segments of overhead wire between Michigan City and South Bend. The temporary busing periods will occur at various times throughout the spring/summer, with the first of these periods being scheduled through Friday, May 17, (this includes the weekend of May 11-12). The State of Indiana has received a $159,349 payment from Sephora USA Inc. to settle a fraud lawsuit against the international retail chain, Attorney General Curtis Hill announced today.The lawsuit alleged that Sephora, which specializes in cosmetics and other beauty products, violated the Indiana False Claims Act by making false statements in connection with its failure to collect gross retail taxes on shipping and handling charges for its internet sales to Indiana consumers. This month’s Elston Grove Walking tour explores the architecture and history of the Elston Grove historic district. See the homes of Michigan City's Gilded Age elites, learn the history of Michigan City's first public library, and dive into the vivid history of Zorn Brew Works. The tour leaves the Barker Mansion at 10:30 am and covers approximately one mile. In the event of rain, a special mansion tour will be offered in place of the walking tour. The South Shore Line announced that construction is set to begin that will add a second entrance/exit to the East Chicago Station platform. The project is expected to continue through December 2019, and will help accommodate the large influx of passengers at East Chicago Station. The improvements include converting the low-level platform to the east of the station into a covered walkway to access a new head house, stairwell and tunnel leading to the eastern parking lot. Additionally, other East Chicago Station projects include improvements to the existing head house, and the installation in 2020 of higher speed track switches
