The Indiana Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program is providing services as usual during the federal government shutdown and has funding to support benefits through March. The Indiana Department of Insurance market conduct examination of First American Title Insurance Company resulted in findings that some Indiana consumers were being overcharged for their title insurance from 2006-2008. First American is based in Nebraska and is licensed to sell title insurance in Indiana. As a result of these findings, Indiana Department of Insurance Commissioner Stephen W. Robertson ordered First American to reimburse consumers $3,126,103 plus an additional $38,142 for violating Indiana’s Gross Premium Tax Statute by underpaying taxes on the premium charged to consumers from 2006-2008. More Hoosiers are working than ever before, as Indiana ended 2018 by reporting record employment numbers for the year and job gains in every major sector measured by the state.The Indiana Department of Workforce Development reported on Jan. 18 that the total number of employed Hoosiers in December preliminarily reached 3,284,190, while private employment hit 2,731,600—both new highs for the state. Total preliminary private employment in 2018 grew by 42,700 people from the previous peak in December 2017, according to DWD. Dating back to July 2009, Indiana has gained 408,400 private jobs since state employment bottomed out during the recession.

Wednesday, the President and Board Members of the Bolt For The Heart (BFTH) foundation were welcomed to Governor Holcomb’s office for a personal “Thank you” for donating an additional 134 AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) units to the Indiana State Police.  This brings the total number of AED units donated to the state police to 465 and marks the fulfillment of a 2014 pledge by BFTH to put an AED in state police road patrol vehicles. The Indiana State Police were requested by Porter County Sheriff Dave Reynolds to investigate a police action shooting involving one of his officers. Preliminary investigation reveals that at approximately 5:36 pm on Wednesday evening, they received a call to assist EMS with a suicidal subject that resided in the 700 block of McCool Road in South Haven. Two Porter County officers arrived at the home and attempted to get the person to answer the door, a third officer arrived and when they looked through one of the home’s window they saw a male who was bloody. As part of ongoing improvements at the Gary Metro Center station, the South Shore Line platform elevator will be closed beginning Monday, Jan. 28, as final tasks are completed.Passengers may continue to access the SSL platform through the main Metro entrance stairwell and via the Broadway St. entrance.Due to the elevator closure, the recommended alternative Accessible station location is East Chicago.The closure is expected to last through Wednesday, Jan. 30th.

On Tuesday at just after 5am Officers from the La Porte Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 600 blk. of 4th St. (corner of 4th St. and F St.) for a structure fire. Officers observed heavy smoke and flames coming from the home. Officers attempted to make entry to make sure there was no one inside but due to heavy smoke and flames they were unable to make entry. Once La Porte Fire arrived on scene they started to extinguish the fire. Members of the fire department were finally able to make entry and upon doing so,

Mayor Ron Meer of the City of Michigan City will host the 2019 Enchanted City Mayor’s Ball. The proceeds will benefit Lubeznik Center for the Arts and Friendship Botanic Gardens. There were several traffic incidents in the WIMS area on Tuesday due to the freezing rain. The westbound toll road was shut down for several hours in the South Bend area. I-94 also had multiple accidents including one just west of Michigan City heading westbound. Keep up to date with the latest traffic, weather, and closings by listening to 95.1 FM and AM 1420 WIMS. The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded a major contract to Rensselaer-based Talbert Manufacturing Inc. The manufacturer will receive more than $360 million over the next five years for the production of semi-trailers for the U.S. Army. Talbert Manufacturing produces a variety of heavy capacity trailers and specialized transportation equipment, according to its website. The DOD says the contract specifically calls for Talbert to produce the M872A4 semi-trailers. Work on the semi-trailers is expected to be complete in January 2024. The U.S. Army Contracting Command in Michigan is the contracting activity.

Applications are available for the Indiana Conference for Legal Education Opportunity (ICLEO) program. The ICLEO program is designed to assist traditionally underrepresented groups in pursuing a legal career. The Indiana Supreme Court established ICLEO more than 20 years ago to help bring diversity to the legal profession. Since then more than 570 have graduated as ICLEO fellows. Fourth Ward City Councilman Sean Fitzpatrick is seeking input from his ward and invites residents of the Fourth Ward to a town hall workshop to share their ideas and opinions. The workshop will be held Saturday, January 26 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 101 St. John’s Road in the Fellowship Hall and is open to all residents of the city’s Fourth Ward.
