Car Break-ins In Michigan City

The Michigan City Police have received unfortunate calls of vehicle entries over the last several days which include thefts, ransacking, and damages. MCPD gave several tips including: ⦁ Always lock your doors and roll up your windows when you park. ⦁ Activate your security system if you have one. ⦁ DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES IN PLAIN SIGHT ⦁ Don’t use the console or glove box as mobile lock boxes. These are obvious to thieves, too. ⦁ Don't hand them the keys MCPD stated in a press release “Hear Something, See Something…….SAY SOMETHING!”

MCHS Student Charged With Possession of a Firearm on School Property

According to a press release from the Michigan City Police, on Sunday, at about 9:15pm, the MCPD received information via social media reference a MCHS student being in possession of a handgun at school this past Friday. An investigation into the received information began immediately. School officials were notified, safety plans were initiated and additional staff was summoned to assist. Throughout the night the entire school was searched. This search utilized staff from the MCPD, MCHS and also a specialized police K-9 from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department that is trained to locate explosives. Additionally, witnesses were located and interviewed.

Purdue Northwest’s fall enrollment sees positive gains in key areas

Purdue University Northwest (PNW) continues to see upward trends in first-time freshman students and in the retention of continuing students in its 2018-19 fall enrollment count. The university increased its first-time freshman population to 1,172 students; a gain of 47 students over last year. Additionally, retention of continuing PNW students increased to a record high of 69.4 percent, representing an 8.6 percent jump in the past two years. “Our fall enrollment this year demonstrates the progress we are making to show students and their families the tremendous quality and value available at Purdue Northwest,” said Chancellor Thomas L. NIPSCO Awards $50,000 in Public Safety Education and Training Grants

Applications Open for 2018 Indiana Propane School Bus Grant

The Indiana Office of Energy Development (OED) announced that applications are being accepted from Indiana public school corporations for the Indiana Propane School Bus grant program. This marks the fourth round of grant funding made available by OED dedicated to propane school buses. Grant recipients will receive between 50 percent to 100 percent of the incremental cost difference between a new propane-powered school bus and a diesel or gasoline-powered school bus. AG Curtis Hill asks U.S. Supreme Court to ensure justice for 4-year-old girl and mother who were brutally slain

Attorney General Curtis Hill announced that he has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to reinstate the death sentence of Fredrick Baer, a man convicted of brutally slashing to death a 4-year-old girl and her young mother. After being convicted of murder, attempted rape and theft, Baer was sentenced to death. Valparaiso Police Investigating CVS Robbery

Valparaiso Police are investigating a robbery that occurred on Friday at approximately 8:30 p.m.at the CVS Pharmacy on Calumet Ave. Police arrived and learned that a male subject had entered the store and demanded Xanex from the pharmacy. The male then fled the store westbound on foot after obtaining a large quantity of Xanex pills.The male subject was described as a male white, 6’0” tall with a thin build. He was wearing a blue hooded sweat shirt and camouflage tan pants. He had a dark colored mask over his face.Police continue to investigate the robbery and ask anybody with information
