Preparation Course for Potential Law Enforcement Applicants

The Valparaiso Police Department and Valparaiso University are partnering to provide a preparation course for potential law enforcement candidates. The course will help candidates better prepare themselves for the hiring and testing process to begin a career in law enforcement. The course will assist applicants to better prepare them for the physical agility test, written test, interview process and general information about the hiring process for the majority of law enforcement agencies. Fatal Crash on US 6 on Tuesday Night

On Tuesday, night just after 10 pm, La Porte County Sheriff's Office Deputies were dispatched to the intersection of US 6 and County Road 400 West, in rural Noble Township, reference a two vehicle crash.  Upon the arrival of the investigating deputy, other emergency personnel were already on scene treating both drivers. The crash investigation revealed that a 2005 GMC Envoy, driven by 20 year old Zachary S. Holland, of Valparaiso, was traveling north on CR 400 West.  A Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 50 year old Lewis K. Obrien, of Westville, was traveling east on US 6. The investigation determined

UNITY FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES ANNUAL UPDATE AND GRANT AWARDS LUNCHEON

At its Annual Update Luncheon on September 12, 2018, Unity Foundation of La Porte County will support more than 80 local nonprofit projects by awarding over $138,000 in grant funding. Gary Woman Injured in Crash

A Gary woman was injured Monday evening when she rear ended a semi on the interstate. Preliminary investigation revealed a 2004 Dodge, driven by 44 year old Kimberly Kennedy of Gary, IN, was in the right lane on I-80/94 west bound when for unknown reasons rear ended a semi-trailer that was in front of her. Kennedy, whose license was suspended, had to be extricated from her vehicle and was taken to Northlake Methodist Hospital in Gary with non-life threatening injuries. New Law Allowing DNA Samples to be Taken From Felons Helps Confirm Samples

A state law allowing DNA samples to be collected from those arrested for a suspected felony helped produce a higher number of matches to crimes than ever before, according to State Rep. Greg Steuerwald (R-Avon). As of this year, a DNA profile is taken from anyone arrested for a felony crime and then compared to others in a nationwide database called the combined DNA index system, or CODIS. Since the law took effect, CODIS has confirmed more than 500 total DNA matches, many of which would likely not have been secured without the new law.

New Research Reveals Academic Progress with School Voucher Program May Not Be on Par with Expectations

New research into Indiana's school voucher program reveals academic progress may not be on par with expectations. Researchers from two universities - Notre Dame and Kentucky - examined the standardized test scores of more than three-thousand low-income students who switched from public to private school during the first year of the Indiana School Choice Scholarship Program. Study co-author Joseph Waddington says they found the math scores of voucher students in private schools dropped compared with their peers who stayed in public schools. Police Investigating Crash that Resulted in Two Deaths

Valparaiso Police Sunday afternoon responded to a crash involving a motorcycle and a sport utility vehicle. The crash occurred at Froberg Road and Indiana State Highway 130. The motorcyclist and a passenger on the motorcycle were traveling eastbound on Highway 130 when a sports utility traveling southbound on Froberg Road pulled out in to the path of the motorcyclist. A female passenger on the motorcycle was killed at the scene. A male subject driving the motorcycle was transported to the hospital (Porter Regional) and died a short time later. Northwest Indiana Region Adult Education Programs Receive Recognition for High Performance

According to the American Community Survey in 2016, 82,413 individuals in Northwest Indiana 18 years of age and older do not have a high school diploma. Northwest Indiana region adult education programs have stepped up to the challenge to help more individuals attain their High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma by offering free HSE preparation classes. Over the last year, area adult education programs have had over 60% achieve HSE and/or significant increases in academic performance. The South Shore Line will be busing weekday (Monday-Friday) passengers beginning Monday, Aug. 20, through Friday, Aug. 24, 2018. Bus service to and from Hudson Lake will not be available during this time. Hudson Lake passengers are encouraged to board at the Carroll Ave. station. Two Incidents Resulting in Death in Lake Michigan

Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating two separate water related incidents in Lake Michigan offshore from Indiana Dunes State Park. At 4:45pm Saturday, the first victim, a 10 year old male from Chicago, was found face down in the water approximately 40 yards from shore. He was brought back to shore and CPR was immediately started. He was transported to Porter Regional Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. July Indiana Employment Report

Indiana’s unemployment rate stands at 3.4 percent for July and remains lower than the national rate of 3.9 percent. With the exception of one month when it was equal (October 2014), Indiana's unemployment rate now has been below the U.S. rate for more than four years. The monthly unemployment rate is a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicator that reflects the number of unemployed people seeking employment within the prior four weeks as a percentage of the labor force. Gov. Holcomb names Lighty as new Executive Director of the Indiana Archives and Records Administration

Gov. Eric J. Holcomb announced that he has selected S. Chandler Lighty to be the new executive director of the Indiana Archives and Records Administration. Lighty will begin his new position on August 27. Since February 2016, Lighty has served as the Director of the Indiana Historical Bureau which recently merged with the Indiana State Library. During his time as director, Lighty led efforts to increase public interest in the state’s history. He advanced the Indiana Historical Maker Program and led other research and outreach initiatives.
