YMCA Elston Branch closing daily at 11 a.m for remainder of week

Due to the excessive heat and limited air conditioning in parts of the building, the Elston branch will be closing early for the remainder of this week, they will be closing daily at 11 a.m. to ensure the safety of their members and staff. Parents of children currently enrolled in summer camp will be contacted directly with more information about alternate arrangements that are being made for summer camp. “We appreciate your understanding and encourage you to visit our La Porte or Long Beach branches, which remain open during regular hours,” the YMCA said on its Facebook page. Michigan City man sentenced to 7 years for firearm offense

A Michigan City man was sentenced to seven years in prison after pleading guilty to being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Twenty-one-year-old Davon Jaqurious Coleman, of Michigan City, was sentenced by a United States District Court judge after pleading guilty to being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, Acting United States Attorney Tina L. Nommay announced. Coleman was sentenced to 84 months in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release. According to documents in the case, police conducted a traffic stop in Michigan City and found Coleman in possession of a stolen loaded firearm

Roadwork on several Michigan City roads this week

Several roads in Michigan City will have roadwork this week today through through Thursday, June 27. Due to weather restrictions last week, paving will be done this week on Dahlia, Minnie, Ruth, and Forest streets, as well as Birdella and Victory lanes. Concrete (cement) crews will be working on William and Ripley streets. All road construction is weather permitting. Updates will be provided as they become available. Victim and teen arrested identified in fatal crash in Porter County

Roadwork on State Road 39 completed early

Roadwork has wrapped up a week earlier than expected at the Indiana Toll Road Bridge over State Road 39 according to Indiana Department of Transportation: Northwest. Crews also finished the State Road 39 seal coat project between U.S. 20 and the Michigan State Line last week so the road is fully open between La Porte and Michigan.

Washington Park Shooting Investigation

On June 22, 2025, at approximately 8:44pm, Officers working in Washington Park reported that multiple gunshots were being fired near the North end of the parking lot. Additional Officers from Uniform Patrol Shift II responded to the park to assist them. The Officers conducted witness interviews and collected evidence. The initial investigation determined that 23 year old Michigan City resident, Keyshaun Stalling, was struck by gunfire following an argument. His injury is not life threatening. The Michigan City Police Department released the following statement on golf cart use: "The Michigan City Police Department would like to remind our residents and visitors that golf carts are not allowed to be operated on any public roadways. U.S. 6 scheduled to close for one week

PORTER COUNTY, Ind. - An Indiana Department of Transportation contractor Enneking Pressure Cleaning will close U.S. 6 between Mander Road and County Road 350 East on or after Monday, June 23. Michigan City police rescued a victim and arrested a man who they say was an armed felon after an incident Wednesday night, according to the Michigan City Police Department. Michigan City Police Department Crime Suppression Unit arrests four after shooting investigation

Four people were arrested after a shooting investigation, according to the Michigan City Police Department. On June 10, Michigan City police officers responded to a “shots fired” complaint at the 200 block of Loran Road in Michigan City. When officers arrived, they discovered that a dispute between two individuals had escalated into gunfire, with the suspect firing multiple rounds into the victim’s vehicle in broad daylight. Several members of the public witnessed the incident as it unfolded. The case was assigned to MCPD’s Crime Suppression Unit (CSU). Detectives immediately began follow-up, interviewing multiple witnesses and ultimately identifying the suspect as
